Hi zusammen

I'm fortunate to be travelling South America during the 2014 World Cup. Perfect timing some would say. I didn't plan to come to Brazil for the World Cup but after arriving in SA and seeing first hand in Chile the excitement and unity that the games create, I had to head there even though I had knew that it would definitely cost me dearly financially, it would be a once in a life time experience I couldn't pass on.
One of the first things I noticed in SA is how the whole continent is unified, celebrating the games as if it was hosted in their own country. I feel that this feeling wouldn't be mirrored in Europe.
I unfortunately didn't get the opportunity to watch a match live however I watched many at the 'fan fests' put up by FIFA across the cities hosting the games, which were open aired big screens showing the games in a safe environment. There were many police around and a brilliant, festival like atmosphere where people would support teams that weren't their own national team with vigour and gusto. Even if you are not a football fan you would find yourself cheering and getting completely involved.
I very much wanted Brazil to win as they have gone to such efforts to host the games and watching the game against Germany where they suffered a tremendous 7-1 defeat I truly felt their pain. Many fans left after twenty minutes but the fans who stayed held a positive attitude supporting and chanting for Brazil till the end, handling the defeat well with respect to Germany. I'm glad that I watched this game on a small island off Salvador called Morro de Sau Paulo where the atmosphere is very relaxed, as I heard from friends that this was not the same case in other major cities.
I'm watching the final today on the same island and I hope for Argentina to win so for the cup to stay here in SA, even though they don't deserve the win as much as the Germans.
I think there are tremendous mixed thoughts over the games finishing, some people see this as how Brazil have been an excellent host and showcased its talents effortlessly with minimum trouble so will be able to do the same for the Olympics. Others feel that the money spent has been an enormous waste of public funds that could have gone to much worthier causes to feed the people in the favelas. I overall feel that this has been a positive experience for Brazil and I am very happy that I managed to be here for it.
